The Vanilla DeskMadagascar vanilla sourcing

An independent sourcing desk

The Vanilla Desk is not a plantation, a curing facility or an exporter. It is a buyer-side desk based in Europe, working with one partner exporter in the SAVA region of Madagascar and with the grower behind the lots.

Why we say this out loud

Nearly every vanilla website presents itself as the direct exporter. In practice, a large share of them are intermediaries — which is a perfectly normal role in commodity trade, and one that professional buyers deal with every day. What is not normal is pretending otherwise. A supplier who is unclear about what they are tends to be unclear about the rest.

So: we source, we qualify, we document, and we are paid on the volume that actually ships — never on a quotation, never on a promise.

On price, one clarification, because the usual assumption is wrong. Our terms rest on a working relationship with the growers we buy from, built on the ground in the SAVA region, and on the recurring business we bring them. A buyer approaching the same exporter as an unknown account does not inherit those terms. Removing the desk does not transfer our pricing to you. Test it rather than take our word for it: ask us, ask elsewhere, and compare like for like.

What that changes for you

We hold no stock, so we have no reason to push a grade that does not suit your process. We are paid on shipments, so we have every reason to make sure the first one goes well enough that there is a second. And because we sit between you and the origin, the practical work — matching a specification, chasing an analysis, checking which documents your customs authority will ask for — happens in your working hours rather than across a nine-hour gap.

Where the vanilla comes from

The SAVA region in the north-east of Madagascar — Sambava, Antalaha, Vohemar, Andapa — produces the majority of the world's vanilla. Our partner works there with a grower we know by name, and one of us has made the trip several times rather than relying on photographs.

Common questions

Are you the producer of the vanilla you sell?

No. We are a sourcing desk. The vanilla is grown and cured in the SAVA region of Madagascar and exported by our partner exporter, who contracts directly with you.

How are you paid?

On the volume that actually ships — not on quotations, not on introductions. It is the reason a first shipment going well matters more to us than the order itself.

Why buy through an intermediary at all?

Two reasons. First, purchase terms: ours rest on a working relationship with the growers, built on the ground, and on the recurring business we bring them. Second, service: a contact in your own time zone who prepares the documentation, compares grades against your specification and calculates your landed cost, instead of a nine-hour email round trip for each question.
